Marketing With Photo Sharing Websites (Part 1)

Posted on 15. Jan, 2012 by in Marketing tips

Flickr and Picasa are two examples of photo sharing websites. They are dedicated to hosting photos and making them available to the world. Facebook and MySpace are two additional photo sharing websites. In the case of these two, the websites have a broader purpose with photo sharing being one of the capabilities.

Why would you take the time to post photos and descriptions on these types of websites? Posting photos to these websites creates something like a photo gallery of your pictures for people to enter and view at their leisure.

Here are five reasons to take advantage of this capability:

Promotes company, products, services and causes

There are many pictures which could help promote your business. Logos, products, and customers in action are just a few of the types of pictures that would give others an awareness and interest of what your business is all about.

Links From Photo Sharing Sites

Most photo sharing websites allow at least one link in your profile. In addition, a link may also be allowed in the description of each photo. This could provide a large number of links pointing to many of your webpages.

Show Up In Search Results on Photo Sharing Sites

Properly naming, describing and tagging your photos on these photo sharing websites can maximize the possibility of your photo pages being at the top of the list when users of the site are searching for keywords specific to your business. This is a great way to get exposure to new potential customers who are looking for information and products like those you provide.

Show Up In Search Results on Search Engines

Webpages at these photo sharing sites also get indexed and ranked by search engines. Consider including these photo webpages in your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy.

Exposure on Other Related Sites

Several of my photos are being used on many related websites. For example, many of my photos on Flickr have usage agreements that allow other people to use them online if they provide a link back to the photo webpage. This builds links for my photos and also encourages others who are visiting those other sites to click on the link and check out me and my photos.

The photo sharing websites are not created equal. There are several things to consider when deciding to post photos online. Part 2 of this blog series will discuss many of them that you need to be aware of.
